Where to get PGP

First of downloading PGP you have to know whether your country allows use of cryptography (if it doesn't allows it you can't use PGP). Besides you have to choose the correct PGP version according to the country where you live. Finally you have to choose the freeware or commercial PGP version. So:
  1. if you live in one of those countries which don't allow use of cryptography, you can't use PGP at all! To know more about cryptography policies in other countries, you can look at: GILC - 1997 Crypto Survey Results and Crypto Law Survey.
  2. Even if your country allows cryptography, you must choose the *right* PGP version according to the country where you live. In fact it is illegal to export PGP from the USA or Canada to any other country, because the USA's government controls export of cryptographic software. They consider strong cryptographic software like munitions or biological or chemical weapons! You have been warned...
  3. There are 2 PGP versions: freeware and commercial. If you consider PGP just for personal use, you can choose the freeware version, but if you are a company and you want to use PGP for your business, you must choose the commercial version.

Unlike earlier versions of PGP, which were exported illegally from the USA, PGP 5.0i was the first PGP version that was legally available outside USA/Canada, because the program was exported as printed books (12 books - over 6000 pages) and then scanned in to make the code available in electronic form. In fact the Export Regulations only covers software in electronic form (e.g. on disks, or via the Internet). You can know more about this issue visiting the International PGP Home Page at the page describing the 'scanning project'. This site is maintained by Ståle Schumacher Ytteborg (he put together pgp26i, and now PGP is legal both inside and outside the US. You just need to use pgp262 version inside the US, and pgp262i versions outside the US). However, you have to consider that one of the latest PGP versions (5.0) was exported legally (as printed books) and so, if you live outside of USA and Canada, you can use that international version (the ending letter 'i' does means international). There are 2 main places where you can download the PGP freeware version:

Anyway I suggest you to visit the International PGP Home Page, because you can find out the sites from where you can download the correct version, just following the clear and easy instructions explained there (besides there you can also find out where you can download the commercial version and, anyway, I suggest you to visit often that page because it is a good referring point to know latest news about PGP).
