There are many ways to send files on the net: you can send/receive files by means of FTP (File Transfer Protocol), or by means of TRICKLE for example. But you can also send files via e-mail or send files to another person by means of a chat client like ICQ or POWWOW. If you are transferring files via FTP, you need a FTP client. However, if your ISP provides you a Telnet access, you could avoid using a client: just connect to the host (the FTP server) and send or receive files by means of 'get' and 'put' commands.
