What's Telnet

Telnet is a service to connect to another computer on the Internet. When you Telnet to an other computer (usually called "host"), you can use its services: you are inside of that host, but it's like you were on your computer. When you need to use a client like Archie for example, and you haven't your local client running on your computer, you can connect to Archie servers via Telnet session. You can use Telnet to get to Gopher for example. Well, every time you need to connect to another computer, you can use Telnet. In other words, when you telnet to an host, your computer becomes part of that host.

To connect just type: Telnet name_of_remote_host

However, if you haven't Telnet on your computer or your provider doesn't offer you this service, you can use your web browser (you need a special software like Tera Term): just type telnet://name_of_host instead of http://name_of_host. You have to add Tera Term inside of "general preferences" if you are using Netscape. You can retrieve Tera Term (or other packages like this) looking on Tucows for example...

Commands

At the prompt you can type '?' in order to see a commands list.

• close (close current connection)
• display (display operating parameters)
• echo (character to toggle local echoing on/off)
• eof (character to cause an EOF)
• escape (character to escape back to telnet command mode)
• erase (character to cause an Erase Character)
• flushoutput (character to cause an Abort Output)
• interrupt (character to cause an Interrupt Process)
• kill (character to cause an Erase Line)
• open (try to enter line-by-line or character-at-time mode)
• open (connect to a site)
• quit (exit telnet)
• send (transmit special characters ('send ?' for more)
• set (set operating parameters ('set ?' for more)
• status (print status informations)
• toggle (toggle operating parameters ('toggle ?' for more)
• z (suspend telnet: Unix prompt without losing connection)
• ! (shell escape)
• ? (print help informations)
