When you have to send messages and you want to be sure about your privacy, you can use some services called 'remailers'. A remailer send your message anonymously to the recipient you have indicated to it. There are three types of remailers:
- Cypherpunk remailers, also called type I
- Mixmaster remailers, also called type II
- Pseudonymous remailers, also called type III
- A Cypherpunk remailer sends the message to the recipient stripping away the sender address on it. You can not answer to the message sent via Cyperpunk remailer. You can encrypt the message sent to the remailer, and the remailer will decrypt it and send it to the recipient address hidden inside the encrypted message. In addition, you can chain 2 or 3 remailers, so each remailer can't know who is sending a message to who. Cypherpunk remailers do not keep logs of transactions.
- A Mixmaster remailer allows to answer to messages. To receive an answer to your message, you have to create encrypted reply blocks. A reply block contains instructions to reach your real address. In order to use a Mixmaster remailer, you must have a program to write your message. That program must be downloaded and complied on your PC or Unix-type computer (Unfortunally at present Mixmaster is unavailable for the Macintosh!). Warning: Because Mixmaster contains cryptography, it may not be exported from the U.S.A. and Canada!
- A Pseudonymous remailer, simply takes away the email address of the sender, gives a pseudonym to the sender and sends the message to the intended recipient (who can be answered via that remailer).
Recently the most popular remailer in the world, 'anon.penet.fi', was shut down because couldn't assure its service anymore. That's happened because people sometimes abuse of some free and public service. So, please, use remailer for legitimate use only! You can know rules to send messages to a remailer by sending an e-mail to that remailer server with 'remailer-help' in the 'Subject:' field.
However here some helpful guidelines:
- You must add the header Request-Remailing-To: (remember: as remailers are case sensitive, type this header exactly as written here!) in your message; if you can't add this header, place two colons (::) on the very first line of your message, then on the next line type Request-Remailing-To: and the address you want to send annonymously to. Skip a line, and then begin the message.
- Remember that many remailers only allow one recipient for message.
