Promoting your site

After developing your site, you have to announce it to your potential visitors. I think there are 5 main ways to promote your site:
  1. Announcing it on some specific newsgroups
  2. Putting the URL inside of 'What's new' or 'Starting point' directories
  3. Submitting the URL to search engines
  4. Putting a signature at the bottom of your e-mails
  5. Using banners

However, remember: having a well announced site is not all the job you must do. In fact people will visit your site just once. Having a good web site (read: informative, helpful and interesting) is the most important thing. People will come back!

Newsgroups

The right newsgroups is: comp.infosystems.www.announce. You can announce here your site. Here a FAQ is posted every week: read it.

Directories

There are a lot of directories that list new sites. Two of them are a must: Netscape what's new and Yahoo!. Before putting your page there, you have to choose the right directory. Search carefully the right directory, because that can be the difference between 1 visitor and 999999999999 visitors. A little suggestion: when, scrolling down sub-catogories, you find sites already listed that are similar to your site, well you have found the right directory! Besides, when you fill out the form to add the URL, you have to pay attention at the title and the comments fields. Think carefully about what keywords you want Yahoo to list you under, and develop your title and comments around them. Here a list of some of them:

Search Engines

Search engines use robots (called friendly 'spiders') to scout the web. They walk around here and there searching for new web pages and new urls. Then they rank pages according to some rules. So you could do nothing, because sooner or later these search engines will find your page. Well, it isn't really so, in fact, the web is becoming bigger and bigger, and search engines could take years before finding your page! So you have to help search engines...Therefore, you have to know how search engines rank pages. First of all, you have to think about your page's title. In fact the page's title is the most important thing. Don't choose a trivial title like 'Bob's page!' or 'My great home page!'. Think about words that visitors will choose to search for your page by means of search engines. If your page deals with flowers for example, choose a title like this: 'Bob's flowers for sale' or something like that. Besides you have to put the same words you want people to type to find your site, and these words should repeat themselves more time inside of your page. In fact search engines prefer pages where they can find the searched word more and more time. For this reason, some guys put a lot of words at the bottom of their pages, and, often they use words that have to do nothing with the real page's content. You shouldn't use this method. The common (politically-correct) ways to put an index to your web pages are: <META> tags and comments tags. In this way you can specify the keywords that visitors will use to find your page. Let's see:

<META name="description" content="the description">
<META name="keywords" content="word1, word2, word3, and so on...">

Where word1, word2 and so on, are words that visitors will use to find your page. Finally, comments. In order to put a comment inside your web page, you have to put '<!--' before the comment and '-->' at the end of comment. So, if you are talking about flowers for example, you could use a comment like this: <!-- flowers flower plants flower-pot potted plants bouquets bunches of flowers rose roses tulip tulips bulbous plants indoor plants evergreen trees exotic plants cactus plants and so on... -->. You have to put these words inside of the <META> tag as well. Do not however excessively repeat keywords, because some search engines may penalize you for this. Infoseek and Lycos for example discard <META> tags if they find the same word more than seven times!! Here some search engines:

  • Altavista
  • Lycos
  • Hotbot

Signature

Put a signature at the end of your e-mails. You should write a couple of descriptive lines. Don't just write something like this: 'Visit my new web site, blah, blah'.

Banners

What's a banner? It's a clickable image that says to visitors: 'Hey, you! Click me! Visit this cool site!'. When you you click on a banner, the link will take you to another site. But the most important issue concerning where one has to put your site's banner. Well, he has to put the banner inside of someone else's site, obviously. Yes, but how to place banners? There are organizations that place banners here and there on the web. Usually they ask you to place another site's banner inside of your page, so when 2 visitors click on that banner, you have the right to have your banner placed into another random site. This is a good way to promote your site. Here some helpful links:

Some helpful tips:

  • You have to explain that visitors have to click on your banner! (Click here!!)
  • Sometimes animated gifs are helpful
  • Banners have usually standard size, however some provider allow you bigger banners...well the bigger your banner is, the more it bothers visitors. So little banners please...
  • Banners with some key words works better than simple graphic banners
