What's a mailing list

People who have same interests, can exchange informations thanks services named 'mailing lists'. All messages sent to a mailing list will be sent again to all people who are subscribed to. Mailing lists can be moderated, by an owner who manage that list, open or close. There are a lot of mailing lists, and there are a lot of 'list of lists'. Stephanie da Silva (arielle@taronga.com) holds a list of all public mailing list, but you can search for specific list using some search engines. There are also specialized search engines who search for mailing list, like 'Listz' (see 'Specialized engines' on Wow). You can also ask to a listserver for a list of all mailing list (warning: that's an huge list!) or for all list where people talk about a specific subject. In order to get that list, you have to send to a listserver a message including 'list global' in the text. But if you are searching for specific subjects, like history for example, you can send a message including 'list global/history' in the text (more about this command and other commands which you can send to a listserver are shown on 'Listserv' on Wowarea).

Basic commands

SUBscribe list_name to join to a mailing list.

UNSubscribe list_name (or SIGNOFF) to leave a mailing list.
