Chatting: ICQ (part 3) |
Status
Here you can configure your status. You can define a message for each status. Status are: Away, N/A, Occupied, DND, Free For Chat. You can choose among presets or you can write your own message. Accept
Here you can define where ICQ has to place received files.
Here you can configure the E-mail client and the E-mail server to send/receive email. If the 'Use current registered Windows e-mail client' field is checked, ICQ will use your favorite email client which you use every times. Besides you have to indicate your SMTP server to send email. This setting is not a problem: look at your favorite email client settings and use the same SMTP server.
Here you can specify when ICQ has to check for your email (for example you could choose to check your email every 10 minutes). To do it, just check the field 'Check for new messages every'. If you want to use ICQ for checking your email, you have to specify your 'Mail Server Address' (look at your favorite email client for these settings) in other words you have to specify your POP3 server (in a nutshell, SMTP server is used to send email, POP3 server is used to receive email). Besides you have to specify your POP3 account (in a nutshell the string before the @ symbol) and your password (I mean your email password, not your ICQ password). Finally you can decide to launch your favorite email client as soon as a new message arrive. To do it, just check the field 'Automatically launch e-mail client when new messages arrive' (in this case you have to check the field 'Use specified e-mail client' and its path - that's where the program is located - on previous window). A last thing: you can check the field 'Retrieve email headers' to see headers of messages you are waiting for.
Here you can specify new external applications, such as Powwow or Cu-seeme for example. Servers
Sometimes the connection is lost. Maybe there are problems on your network, or simply the Internet is too much busy. However there is another possible reason: the ICQ server that you are using is too much busy. Well, there are several ICQ servers, and here you can add them. The port number is usually 4000. Just press the 'Add' button and type the server's name and its port number. This is a list of ICQ servers:
I suggest you to add all of them, so when an ICQ server is busy, ICQ will try another server. Besides I suggest you to check the field: 'Move last sucesfully connected server to top of list'. Connection
Here you have to provide some information about your connection (via modem or by means of a permanent Internet connection; in the second case you have to specify if you are behind a firewall or proxy. To know firewall settings ask to your network administrator). You can know updated tips if the field 'Don't Show "ICQ Announcements" Dialog' is not checked. I suggest you to check the field 'Launch ICQ on Startup', so every times you turn on your PC, ICQ will be launched. Random Chat
When the field 'I want to be available for random Chat & Messages' is checked, you will be available for random chat. In other words all ICQ users will be able to find you when they will search for new friends. Here you can also set your favorited topics, your gender, your age and so on. TelephoneThis feature is helpful for users who have a second telephone line. To know more, look at: http://www.icq.com/telephony/call-request.html. |
