18/03/2006 - 09:55 (Category: Windows) Unlike Mac Os X systems, Windows systems are prone to defragment your hard disk. In fragmented hard disk files are fragmented here and there. When you get a fragmented file, heads have to run here and there to get the whole file. That is a time consuming task. Furthermore, that will reduce you hard disk life. Go on reading to know more. Windows XP comes with a defragmentation utility. You can find it here: -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. Before running it, you have to disable all unnecessary services and programs that are running in the background. In fact many of them will interfere in the defragmentation process. Antivirus programs for example, will break the defragmentation process many times. You should stop all running programs actually, because many of them write data in your hard disk. One more thing: check your hard disk for errors before proceeding with defragmentation. To check your hard drive for errors: 1) right click the hard drive to check for errors 2) go to Properties -> Tools -> Run Scandisk 3) select automatically correct file system errors 4) select check for bad sectors 5) click the Start button Go back
