Windows XP indexes all files in your hard disk, so when you perform a search on the hard disk, it is faster. Anyway that slows down your computer, so if you don't perform so many searches, well, you can speed up Windows XP turning off indexing:
1) right-click your hard drive icon and select Properties
2) uncheck 'Allow indexing service to index this disk for faster searches'
3) click Apply to all folders and subfolders in the pop up window
It wil take a while for the changes to take effect.
