How to uncheck 'Always use this program to open these files' with unknown files

26/02/2006 - 09:15 (Category: Windows)

If you open an unknown file (i.e. Windows doesn't know that file extension) you can choose a program to open that file and Windows checks the box 'Always use this program to open these files' for you every time. To avoid that, let's edit the Windows' registry:

1) click on Start -> Run
2) type 'regedit'
3) go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> Unknown -> shell -> openas -> command
4) replace the value: 'c:\windows\rundll32.exe Shell32.dll,OpenAs_Rundll %1' with 'c:\windows\rundll32.exe Shell32.dll,OpenAs_Rundll %1 %2'

You are done!
WARNING: the Windows' registry is the heart of Windows: you will be in *TROUBLE* if you damage it! Your computer could be temporarily unavailable! So, before editing it, please make sure you have a backup copy of it. Refer to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/en-us to know more about the Windows' registry backup procedure
