You can disable applications from running at start up by means of the Microsoft's msconfig.exe program:
1) click on Start -> Run
2) type 'msconfig' and press Enter
3) click on the Startup tab
4) uncheck applications you don't want running at start up
5) close msconfig then restart Windows (a pop up telling you that you must restart your computer will show up)
After you reboot you may receive a message saying "you have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to your system...". Don't worry: just check the box 'Do not show me this message again' and click the OK button.
WARNING: using msconfig, uncheck unnecessary applications *ONLY*. If you are not sure don't uncheck them.
