Mac Os X: undoing dragging operations

You are dragging an icon across several folders and windows but, suddenly, you realize that's not a good choice. So you must stop the whole dragging operation.
Of course you can retrace your steps and drop the icon where you started. Nope! There is a shorter way: just press the Esc key while you are dragging and you will see the icon returning to its original location!
