To start up in Safe Mode, follow these simple steps:
1) Shut down your computer (your computer must be shut down)
2) Press the power button
3) As soon as you hear the start up tone, press *and hold* the shift key
4) Release the shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator
To leave Safe Mode, restart the computer normally, without holding any key (from AppleCare Knowledge Base)
