If you are frequently minimizing several open windows and you miss the Windows desktop icon placed on the taskbar, don't worry: you can do the same thing with Mac Os X:
1) Open the Finder
2) Go to Macintosh HD -> Users -> yourname -> Desktop
3) Drag the desktop icon on the Dock
Now you have access to all files, icons and folders placed on your desktop with one click (without having to close all open windows)
