You can make a backup of your home directory using Disk Utility.
1) Launch Disk Utility (Applications -> Utility -> Disk Utility)
2) Select New image from folder (File -> New -> Image from folder). Click on Image
3) Select the folder to backup (e.g.: your home directory)
4) Select a destination where you would like to place the backup image
5) Choose compressed format
Now you have a .dmg (disk image) backup file. Store it whree you like (e.g.: burn it to CD/DVD). To restore from backup, just double click the .dmg file:
it will appear in the Finder.
